Guide to the contribution formatting - BBCode

Příspěvekod Asce » 22.1.2016 11:58:44

Dear citizens of Pedonia Empire, we provide a guide for those of you that are not familiar with formatting contributions you write. This is an explanation of using BBCodes in a simple clear form. Besides various formatting of text, it enables us to insert web links, images and videos…

BBCode works on the following general principle:
Text begins with the initial mark of desired BBCode, followed by your text that will be formatted, and finally by the final mark of the same BBCode. You may either write your text first, then select a part of it by mouse, and then click on a tool (icon or name); or you may first select the tool and then write text between the square brackets of the initial and final codes.
Individual tools can be nested like parentheses in mathematical formulas.
You can choose, copy and insert desired codes from the examples below to your contribution where you will only replace the text by yours.

CONTENTS (for direct access to the desired topic, click on the link)
Font style
Font colour
Font size
Justification and headings
Lists
Web page link (hyperlink)
Link inside document (bookmark)
Image insertion and properties
Hyperlink image
Insertion of video from Youtube
Insertion of general video (preferred)
Special symbols - BBCode "char"
Citation
Citation with image preview

Font style

Bold font („B“), italics („I“), underlined („U“), etc.

Example – part of the text will be highlighted in boldface

This text will be in normal font. This text will be bold. This text will be in normal font.

Kód: Vybrat vše

This text will be in normal font. [B] This text will be bold.[/B] This text will be in normal font.

Example of usage – part of the text will be written in bold face + undelined, part only in bold, part in normal font (combined BBCodes):

This is bold text. This is bold undelined text. This is normal text.

Kód: Vybrat vše

[B] This is bold text. [U] This is bold undelined text.[/B][/U] This is normal text.

Font colour

Click on the following BBCode icon:
Obrázek
Then choose the colour of the pre-selected text by mouse clicking on the colour cell. Or vice versa – choose your colour and then insert text between the brackets of the initial and final codes.

Example:

This text is green. This text is in the default colour.

Kód: Vybrat vše

[color=#008040] This text is green.[/color] This text is in the default colour.

Font size

Font size is implemented like its colour. Select predefined size from the combobox (you see text "Výchozí"). If you do not like any of the sizes offerred, you may later modify it in the initial mark.

Example:

This is small size text and this is large.

Kód: Vybrat vše

[size=85]This is small size text [/size][size=150] and this is large.[/size]

Justification and headings

It is logical to justify your text to the left page margin (no code needed), to the right margin (choose „right“ from the combo box), to the center of page („centre“), or to both margins („justify“). Without BBCode, your text will be automatically justified to the left margin. This is the standard in most documents, both margins justifications is required in books and newspapers, centering is used for headings.

Use prepared BBCodes „h1“ (main heading) or „h2“ (subheading). These functions will do several formatting steps for you. Certainly, you may modify your headings, e.g. add colour, as in other cases.

Example:

My heading

Kód: Vybrat vše

[h1]My heading[/h1]

My centered heading

Kód: Vybrat vše

[h1][centre] My centered heading [/centre][/h1]

My green and centered heading

Kód: Vybrat vše

[h1][color=#008000][centre] My green and centered heading [/centre][/color][/h1]

Lists

We differenciate between simple list (e.g. bullets) and ordered (numbered) list. Realize that you have to use two BBCodes. The first code delimits the entire list (beginning and end), the other code starts individual items of the list.

For creating simple list, use the following icon or keys alt+l:
Obrázek
Insert the first item between the initial and final marks of the BBCode using the icon „bullet“:
Obrázek
This is unpaired BBCode (text of the item will finish at another „bullet“ or final mark of entire list. Write text, insert new „bullet“ for each item and so on.

Example:

  • This is text of my first item
  • This is text of the second item

Kód: Vybrat vše

[list][*] This is text of my first item [*]This is text of the second item [/list]

Use the following icon or keys alt+o to create numbered list:
Obrázek
Write a number after the initial „=“, usually 1. This is the starting value for the automatic numbering. Insert the first item between the initial and final marks of the list using icon:
Obrázek
This BBCode is unpaired: text of the item ends at the next item code or at the final list code. Write text, insert another item code and so on.

Example:

  1. This is text of my first item
  2. This is text of my second item

Kód: Vybrat vše

[list=1][*] This is text of my first item [*]This is text of my second item [/list]

Web page link (hyperlink)

Press icon:
Obrázek
  1. Simple link that includes directly the web page address will appear when you insert the address between the initial and final codes:
    http://www.pedonia.com
This is the complete code for this link:

    Kód: Vybrat vše

    [url]http://www.pedonia.com[/url]

  2. Smarter link is produced by adding „=“ and the address after „url“ just inside the initial code. Text between the mark brackets will describe the target:
    Our page
This is the complete code for this link:

    Kód: Vybrat vše

    [url=http://www.pedonia.com]Our page[/url]

Link inside document (bookmark)

To refer to another topic or web page outside forum, we added its address (URL) into initial BBCode. If we want to jump to another paragraph of the same long complicated text (such as this one) we need something else, not the page address which is the same for origin and target. Thus, we have to define a Bookmark. It includes BBCode „zalozka_cil=“ in the place from which we jump, and BBCode „zalozka_def=“ in the place where we will jump to. It has been used for creating CONTENTS of this page.

Ho to do it:
  • Write text in the place from which the jump should come including some words defining the target (below it is the word men).
  • Select these words by mouse
  • Select BBCode „zalozka_cil=“ from combobox
  • Write some label after „=“ in the initial code, such as MenBookmark
  • Find the target within your text, place cursor above the target text (in the following example it is Chapter 3)
  • Select BBCode „zalozka_def“ from the combobox
  • Write the label name after „=“ (in our case MenBookmark)

Example where clicking on the word men will cause jump to the name of Chapter 3:

This article is about girls, boys, men and women.
Chapter 1: Girls
Chapter 2: Boys
Chapter 3: Men
Chapter 4: Women

Kód: Vybrat vše

 [zalozka_cil= MenBookmark]men[/zalozka_cil]

Kód: Vybrat vše

[zalozka_def= MenBookmark][/zalozka_def]

Image insertion and properties

Use icon:
Obrázek
Insert image address (complete URL) between inital and final BBCodes:
Obrázek
This is the code for this image:

Kód: Vybrat vše

 [img]http://www.pedonia.com/obrazy_kp/pom/avatarnavstevnik.jpg[/img]

It is important to add source information to each image. Place hyperlink to the image file („Link“) and to the source page („Source: xxx“)

Exaple for the above image:

Link; Source: Pedonia

This is the code for the sources:

Kód: Vybrat vše

[url=http://www.pedonia.com/obrazy_kp/pom/avatarnavstevnik.jpg]Link[/url]; Source: [url= http://www.pedonia.com]Pedonia[/url]

Hyperlink image

The following code will show an image and will cause a jump to the target web page after mouse click. This is often used with image thumbnails – it will show full image after click.

It combines BBCodes for hyperlink and for image.

Example (image of flag refers to the Czech version of the page "About us"):

Obrázek

This is the code for hyperlink image:

Kód: Vybrat vše

[url=http://www.pedonia.com/app.php/page/uvodni_str][img]http://www.pedonia.com/images/icons/vlajky/cz_symb.gif[/img][/url]

Insertion of video from Youtube

Select "youtube" from combobox "Custom BBCodes". Insert only short identifier of the target video between the marks, such as Y9oYXn9eBis. This is the right end of the entire address of Youtube web page with target video.

Example:

This is the code for youtube video:

Kód: Vybrat vše

[youtube]Y9oYXn9eBis[/youtube]

Video - general BBCode "video"

Choose BBCode "video" from combobox "Custom BBCodes". Insert complete url address of the target video between the initial and final marks, e.g. "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9oYXn9eBis".

This BBCode
  • Supports more servers, not only Youtube;
  • Requires entire URL address of the video;
  • Player is a little bit larger than when using BBCode "youtube";
  • Double click enlarges the video to full screen.

Example:
phpBB [video]

This is the code for video:

Kód: Vybrat vše

[video]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9oYXn9eBis[/video]

Special characters - BBCode "char"

You may get some characters and symbols that are not present on your keyboard using this BBCode. Write the English name of the symbol between the initial and final marks. Editor will transform it to the desired symbol.

Examples (char and keyword into BBCode):
  • € euro
  • $ dollar
  • £ pound
  • ½ frac12
  • ¾ frac34 (Alike also other fractions, where in numerator and denominator is the only 1 digit)
  • © copy
  • ® reg
  • ± plusmn
  • ° deg (degree sign)
  • → rarr
  • ‰ permil (per mille sign)
  • † dagger
Code for euro looks as follows:

Kód: Vybrat vše

[char]euro[/char]

Citation

Meaning of citation is to announce which person and what text you refer to. Cite briefly, only the most important part for understanding of context by other readers.

Create this element, which is common in discussions, using one of the following processes:

  • when you are already in your new contribution use BBCode icon:
    Obrázek
  • from the original contribution which you want to react to, press icon „Answer with citation“ (upper right corner):
    Obrázek
The initial mark for citation includes array of characters [quote=name in quotation marks]. Name belongs to the user or external person that you cite. You can cite anybody; in fact, there is no link between any contribution and your citation.

When you start to cite only when being already in your contribution, you have to add „=“, quotation marks and the name. When you insert the citation using the function „Answer with citation“ from contribution you want to react to, there is automatically the name, but there is complete text of that contribution. Erase all unnecessary text.
The word "píše" will appear after the name of the cited person - this means "writes" in Czech language.

Example of citation:
Asce píše:Hello, how are you?

This is the code for citation:

Kód: Vybrat vše

[quote="Asce"]Hello, how are you?[/quote]

Citation with image preview

Some contributions contain a long set of photographs. If you want to refer to one of them, it would be difficult to explain which one you mean. It is not practical to say something like "the sixth photo from the top". It is much better to use citation with inserted preview of the image of interest.

Example of citation with preview:
Obrázek Here you may also cite part of the text...
The preview was made using the following procedure:
  1. Copy entire source web address of the image for preview.
  2. Paste the address to your future answer.
  3. Insert BBCode [img] around the address.
  4. Insert BBCode [quote] around all this.
  5. To insert also text, write it after code [/img] here.
This is the code for citation:

Kód: Vybrat vše

[quote][img]http://s14.postimg.org/97cip9ym9/38274864_FJK.jpg[/img] Text...[/quote]
